About
An independent local guide to the businesses, parks, and places that define North Seattle. One neighborhood at a time, ranked by a transparent formula and verified by humans who actually live here.
What we cover
Everything north of the Ship Canal (Salmon Bay through the Montlake Cut), south of N 145th St, between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. That's 24 macro neighborhoods including Ballard, Fremont, Wallingford, Greenwood, Phinney Ridge, Green Lake, the U District, Roosevelt, Ravenna, Wedgwood, Laurelhurst, Sand Point, Maple Leaf, Northgate, Lake City, Bitter Lake, Crown Hill, Blue Ridge, Broadview, View Ridge, Windermere, and University Village.
Anything south of the Ship Canal (Magnolia, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, Downtown, West Seattle) is intentionally out of scope. There are plenty of guides for the rest of the city. This one is hyper-local on purpose.
How rankings work, in plain English
Every business gets a Composite Score from 0 to 100, built from five weighted signals:
- Quality (50%) — review aggregations across multiple sources, Bayesian-smoothed so thin-data places can't dominate.
- Engagement (15%) — internal saves, votes, and clicks from people on this site.
- Editor score (15%) — human-curated visit scores. Expanding monthly.
- Social sentiment (10%) — buzz across neighborhood social channels, themed and AI-classified. We never republish post text.
- Trust + freshness (10%) — BBB rating, chamber membership, last-verified date, claim status.
What we won't do
- No pay-to-play rankings. Businesses cannot buy their position.
- No fabricated reviews or quotes. Themed summaries are our own writing, paraphrased from public signal.
- No verbatim republishing of third-party review text.
- No third-party trackers beyond Cloudflare's privacy-respecting analytics.
Who's behind this
Best of North Seattle is built and maintained by the team at Zaceos. The project is independently funded and runs on a small monthly stipend. No outside investors. No advertiser influence on rankings.
We're locals. We walk Greenwood Ave. We bike the Burke-Gilman. We argue about which taqueria does the best al pastor (it's a real debate). This site exists because we couldn't find a current, honest, hyper-local guide for our half of the city.
